This Integrated Motor Assist (IMA) system harnesses energy dispersed when you brake and puts it to use, making your car more efficient while you save on petrol costs
No power plugs allowed
This just isn't that type of hybrid. The no-compromise CR-Z charges itself while on the move. You still need to fill it up at your local petrol station, you'll just notice you're doing it less often.
How Honda Hybrid works
1. Idling
When stationary the petrol engine automatically turns off (also known as AUTO STOP*) to minimise fuel consumption and emissions. The car sits silently as you wait in traffic or at stop lights.
*Under certain conditions the engine will remain operational.
2. Acceleration
When you start off or accelerate, the electric motor and petrol engines combine to give a dual power supply. This maximises efficiency saving on fuel costs
3. Cruising
Once cruising at low speeds, the electric motor kicks in and stops the pistons firing – providing power from stored kinetic energy.
This stored energy comes from the battery pack. So you keep running costs and fuel consumption to a minimum.
4. Deceleration
The battery gets charged when the car is slowing, travelling downhill or braking, with the wheels acting like a dynamo to charge the power pack. Again, you're saving on fuel and emissions.
Finally, a manual hybrid
In a world first for a hybrid vehicle, the Honda CR-Z gives you a choice of transmissions. Choose between a 6-speed manual transmission and Honda's automatic Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT).
CVT Automatic
Available on all CR-Z models, the fuel efficient CVT has more ratio choices than a conventional auto, to take better advantage of engine power and fuel efficiency.
3 Mode Driving System
The glow around the CR-Z's speedo changes colour to match your 3-Mode Driving System setting. It turns red in SPORT mode, and between shades of blue and green in Normal and ECON mode to provide feedback on how economically you're driving.
The best of both worlds
The CR-Z combines sprightly handling with a fuel efficiency that runs as leanly as 4.7 litres per 100 kilometres on the open road.
Sharp suspension
CR-Z's low centre of gravity, rigid chassis, wide track and short wheelbase keep the tyres gripped to the ground. Combined with its sharp suspension, short overhangs and direct-feel steering, turning into corners soon turns into an addiction.
Five star safety
ANCAP is an independent organisation that puts vehicles through rigorous testing to find out their level of safety in the event of a serious accident. Honda's proud to say the CR-Z has a 5-star rating.

Drive every drop with ECO assist
The CR-Z's Eco Assist system is here to help you drive as economically as you want to drive.
In NORMAL and ECON modes, the glow around the speedo shifts between shades of blue and green to provide feedback on how economically you're driving.
Blue means you could be doing better, while green tells you that you're onto a good thing.
Meanwhile, the 'eco guide bar' to the right of the speedo tells you if you're accelerating or braking too hard.
Another component of the CR-Z's Eco Assist system is the 'eco score'. At the end of each journey, you are assigned a score that rewards efficient driving.
As your lifetime score grows, so too does a graphical depiction of a plant on your dashboard display, marking your progress.
